Razi Petrochemical Complex, located in Bandar Imam Khomeini, is one of the largest and oldest petrochemical complexes in Iran. It consists of Ammonia Units 1, 2, and 3, Urea Units 1, 2, and 3, and Sulfur, Acid, and Gas Treatment Units.
Urea Unit 1 is one of the earliest production units in the complex. It was established in the 1960s with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year, later increased in two phases to 700,000 and 875,000 tons per year. The urea production process in this unit is based on receiving dehydrated liquid ammonia (including unprocessed ammonia from the unit and a compensating amount from the ammonia plant outlet) and carbon dioxide gas (from the ammonia unit outlet), converting them into prilled urea through a high-pressure process.
Since around 2003, the Urea Unit 1 has been shut down due to technical reasons and remains out of service. Therefore, Razi Petrochemical Company has defined a project to conduct technical inspections, feasibility studies, and economic assessments aimed at the revamp and re-commissioning of Urea Unit 1 with a capacity of 900 tons per day, utilizing new technology for urea granulation by the Fluidized Bed Granulation method.
The project is being carried out by ANEDCO Engineering and Industrial Group in cooperation with the Russian Research and Design Institute for Urea and Organic Synthesis Products (NIIK).
